This Dubai travel guide starts with something that trips people up: Dubai is the capital of its own emirate, not of the UAE. The country’s capital is Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah sits right next door.
The landscape is a fun mix of desert dunes, a long sandy coastline and a skyline that rises out of nowhere. The culture is Emirati at heart, but people from all over the world live here, so the food is great. Try shawarma, machboos (spiced rice with meat), sweet luqaimat dumplings and karak chai. Dubai is best known for the Burj Khalifa, giant malls and luxury, though the older side of the city is where you’ll spend the best afternoon.
Dubai began as a small fishing and pearling settlement around Dubai Creek. The Al Maktoum family has ruled since 1833, and the creek grew into a busy trading port.
Oil was found offshore in 1966, but Dubai’s reserves were modest. So its rulers bet on trade instead, opening Jebel Ali Port in 1979 and launching Emirates airline in 1985. The UAE itself was formed in 1971, with Dubai as one of its founding emirates.
The Burj Khalifa opened in 2010 and stands 828 meters tall. All of that shaped modern Dubai tourism, which is really a story of smart planning as much as sunshine.
Every Dubai travel guide starts with the Burj Khalifa, and for good reason. The view from the observation decks honestly doesn’t feel real.
Right next door, the Dubai Mall has a fountain show that’s free to watch from the waterfront in the evenings.
Then go old-school. Walk through the Al Fahidi Historic District, ride an abra (a small wooden boat) across Dubai Creek, and wander the Gold and Spice Souks in Deira. Most visitors skip this side of the city, which is a shame.
For beach time, Jumeirah Beach and JBR are easy picks. A desert safari is worth doing once, and the Museum of the Future is a great rainy-day, or rather scorching-day, stop.
Best season: November to March is the comfortable stretch. Summers are very hot and humid, so Dubai tourism slows down and hotel rates often drop.
Rules depend on your passport. Some nationalities enter visa-free or get one on arrival, while others must apply ahead. Check the official UAE government website before you book flights.
The Dubai Metro and trams are clean and cheap, and a Nol card covers them. Taxis work well for short hops.
Downtown is best for sights, Dubai Marina for the beach, and Deira or Bur Dubai for lower prices and old-city character.
Book ahead: Burj Khalifa tickets, desert safaris and the Museum of the Future.
Save money: Travel in the cooler shoulder months, use the metro, eat at small local cafés, and stick to public beaches. Want the budget version of this Dubai travel guide? Bundling your flight and hotel is often the easiest win.
